Table Rock stands out in the distance of Linville Gorge.

Miles and Directions

0.0 Start on the Pine Gap Trail, a singletrack path leaving the southeast corner of the parking area. The narrow way descends over an improved surface, but still with plenty of roots, rocks, and imperfect footing.

0.1 A rock outcrop to the left of the trail provides your initial vista into the Linville Gorge. Hike along the base of sheer stone bluffs.

0.5 Reach a spur trail going left to the Linville River after a few switchbacks. Visit the river if you please. Boulders overlook slow pools and beckon hikers to the moving aqua amid still stone.

0.8 Come to a four-way trail junction in Pine Gap. Here a spur trail leads left 0.2 mile down to the inside of a bend in the Linville River, where a rocky bar faces a vertical bluff. The Bynum Bluff Trail leads acutely right up the nose of a rocky ridge to Kistler Memorial Highway. Join the Linville Gorge Trail. It curves slightly right here, turning southwest with the bend of the river.

1.1 The trail takes you next to a rockhouse.

1.1 Bridge a tributary, continuing uphill.

1.2 Reach a rocky precipice. Hikers can peer upstream into the river gorge, with Brushy Ridge and Long Arm Mountain rising in the background. Note the rapids and pools below.

1.3 Come to the Linville River at a big rock slab after passing a dripping cliffline. Gain a close-up look at the wild waterway.

1.4 Pass an unnamed 15-foot waterfall as the trail and river curve left. A spur leads to the cataract with a big plunge pool. Continue cruising beneath bluffs.

1.7 A spur descends left to the river. Stay with the Linville Gorge Trail.

1.9 Pass a spur trail leading left to a view along a narrow outcrop just before coming to the Cabin Trail. It makes a nearly 1,000-foot climb in 1.0 mile before reaching Kistler Memorial Highway. Stay with the Linville Gorge Trail as it curves around a hollow.

2.2 Come alongside a rock promontory with a down-gorge view of the Tower of Babel rising from the heart of the gorge.

2.3 Step over a clear, perennial stream then turn downstream along it. Ahead, look for a user-created spur here leading left to the river. Stay right with the Linville Gorge Trail.
